The Team Who Touched Hearts Across The Globe

17 Jul
This Sunday Japan head into the Women’s World Cup Final as the clear under dogs. After 26 consecutive defeats to the U.S. Women most annalists will tell you the Japanese will find nothing but defeat come the 90th minute. Yet they were never expected to come this far. Japan has been arguably the biggest surprise of this World Cup. After defeating home favorites Germany, Japan’s string of games had already been considered a major success among the football world. Yet, they continued to defeat a complex Swedish side who had already handed the U.S. their first group stage defeat in history.

Of course it only isn’t their recent success that has gained them countless fans throughout this WC campaign. It was their humility going into the games. The Japan women have only praised other teams before and after facing them, far different from their U.S. counterparts who lie on the other end of the spectrum. You can’t help but feel some sympathy for the Japan women. They have given it their all.

Many of the Japan women have expressed that thoughts of those at home have helped push them through. Japan midfielder Kozue Ando was quoted saying, “Now we can win the World Cup. It is fantastic. We play for all the people in Japan. We hope they can forget for some hours the follows of the earthquake.” Throughout this WC campaign the Japanese Women’s Team have faced an uphill batter just like their country. They have faced teams everyone figured they were destined to loose.

Tune in on ESPN2 Sunday to watch the U.S. play Japan in the Women’s World Cup Final.
